Food and Funding: Regions Foundation, Regions Bank Help Second Harvest Feed Community After Tornadoes

Regions Foundation provides $20,000 grant; Regions Bank associates volunteered to help people impacted by recent storms in Tallahassee.

By Nestor Mato | June 5, 2024

TALAHASSEE, Fla. – June 5, 2024 – The Regions Foundation on Wednesday announced financial support for Second Harvest of the Big Bend in its work to help feed communities impacted by tornadoes on May 10, as well as those facing food insecurity year-round. In addition, Regions Bank associates volunteered to help feed more than 1,000 families recovering from the storms.

Regions Foundation Funding:

The Regions Foundation’s grant to Second Harvest of the Big Bend amounts to $20,000. A Feeding America food bank based in Tallahassee, Florida, Second Harvest of the Big Bend serves 16 counties. The organization is dedicated to supporting neighbors facing food insecurity by providing access to healthy and nutritious food.

“Many families in Leon County and surrounding areas are struggling to recover after storm damage and food loss from power outages,” said Marta Self, executive director of the Regions Foundation. “Second Harvest is helping keep people from going to bed hungry, and we are proud to support that work. We realize there will be a long road to healing. This funding helps provide not only immediate assistance, but also continued support for the days and weeks to come.”

Since the storm, Second Harvest has continually served affected communities to help ensure having food is one less thing to worry about during this difficult time. From door-to-door delivery to seniors and veterans, to large-scale distributions to working families, the approach has been multifaceted.

“Thousands of people in Leon County were already experiencing food insecurity before the tornadoes,” said Monique Ellsworth, CEO for Second Harvest of the Big Bend. “Responding to a disaster is not generally something that is budgeted for; this support ensures we are able to continue responding to these needs. Having the backing of the Regions Foundation allows us to keep the good work going, while also encouraging our community to continue to support us.”

The Regions Foundation is a nonprofit that is primarily funded by Regions Bank. The Foundation supports a wide range of community and economic development opportunities, as well as financial wellness initiatives and more.

Regions Bank Volunteering:

Regions Bank associates volunteered to step up to the plate to provide food for families during Second Harvest’s Disaster Distribution at Governor’s Square Mall.

“In just a few short hours, we helped serve more than 1,000 families recovering from the tornadoes and power outages,” said Felicia Richardson, Tallahassee market executive for Regions Bank. “I was grateful to join my team and support Second Harvest as the organization helps our neighbors in their time of need. It was heartwarming to see the gratitude expressed by so many families as they received food supplies to help restock their pantries.”

During the May 16 event, boxes of pantry staples were distributed including fresh produce, frozen meats, eggs, cases of water, and bread. Diapers and formula were also given to families with babies and toddlers.

“Some of our neighbors lost hundreds of dollars’ worth of food after experiencing power outages for days. We recognized the large necessity to restock refrigerators, freezers, and pantries,” said Ellsworth. “The need for continued support is absolutely essential. Together with the help of volunteers, we can fight hunger as we recover from the storm and beyond.”
