#BanksNeverAskThat: Hang Up!

When something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut. Acting quickly can stop a scam cold.

By Doug Segrest | October 9, 2026

When something feels off and you suspect a scammer may be at work, take steps to protect yourself.

The American Bankers Association’s #BanksNeverAskThat campaign is back with a monthlong educational effort designed to help consumers recognize phishing red flags and stop fraud in its tracks.

This week, the focus is on what to do when something doesn’t feel right, courtesy of the ABA.

One of the warning signs is when they ask for information or pressure you to do something that makes you uncomfortable.” Kimberly Reece, financial crimes customer advocacy manager at Regions Bank

 6 Anti-Scam Power Moves

  1. Block the contact.

When they ask you to open a link.

  2. Hang up.

When they ask you to keep a secret.

  3. Hit delete.

When they send you an attachment.

  4. Ignore the message.

    When they request personal information.

  5. Report it.

When they pressure you to log in to your account or send money through a payment app.

  6. Verify first.

When they ask you to click, pay or respond.

“Scammers use phishing attacks to gain your trust and access your personal information,” said Kimberly Reece, financial crimes customer advocacy manager at Regions Bank. “One of the warning signs is when they ask for information or pressure you to do something that makes you uncomfortable.

“At Regions, we encourage customers to Stop, Call and Confirm. Remember, someone making a legitimate request won’t be offended if you take extra steps to verify it.”

Throughout October, the #BanksNeverAskThat campaign offers additional resources to help you protect yourself from scams. Take a few minutes to explore these short, interactive and informative tools:

  • Learn the red flags of five major scams.
  • Practice Safe Checks.

“The #BanksNeverAskThat campaign is a great reminder about the dangers of phishing scams,” said Jeff Taylor, senior vice president in the Regions Corporate Banking Group. “Regions proudly participates because we are dedicated to fighting fraud year-round.”
