In the Limelight: Laine Smith and William Chenoweth

Two Regions Bank associates were recently honored by the Birmingham Business Journal’s NextGen: Money awards.

By Candace Higginbotham | September 7, 2023

Who

Laine Smith,
Risk Management Model Governance manager

What

Birmingham Business Journal’s NextGen: Money awards honor the next generation of leaders in the banking, finance and wealth management industries in Birmingham, Alabama. These awards recognize individuals 30 and under who are already making waves in the industry.

Why

After joining Regions as a Risk Management Model Validation analyst in mid-2020, Smith has quickly proven herself as top performer and a strong leader – rising to manager level in two years – in a highly competitive and demanding field.

Modeling drives efficiency of insight and is a vital part of the banking business. Innovation in technology and modeling capabilities are continuously evolving, and as specialists in model risk, Smith’s team must stay informed and up to date alongside data scientists and model developers as the bank explores new possibilities.

In her own words

“I find myself surrounded by people with incredible knowledge and experience in Model Risk Management, and the puzzle of putting together a skilled team and helping everyone contribute their unique strengths and viewpoints is just as exciting to me as the data and analytics puzzles that I worked through as a model validation analyst.

“I’ve had countless conversations with my own managers and mentors about my career goals and how to tailor my day-to-day activities to achieve them, and I strive to hold space for those same conversations with my own team.”

Who

William Chenoweth,
Vice President, Portfolio manager, Wealth Management

What

Birmingham Business Journal’s NextGen: Money awards honor the next generation of leaders in the banking, finance and wealth management industries in Birmingham. These awards recognize individuals 30 and under who are already making waves in the industry.

Why

Chenoweth began his career in Wealth Management at Regions shortly after graduating from Millsap College in May 2015. In July 2018, Chenoweth was promoted to his current role of portfolio manager where he manages and services a book of private wealth management clients as the dedicated investment officer.

Chenoweth quickly built a successful practice and became a valued member of the team where the majority of portfolio managers are quite tenured. He was able to integrate himself into this veteran team of wealth managers, while earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and clients. His book is within the top 10 and he consistently beats his goals – noting that most importantly he highly values the relationships with his clients. His team covers North Central Alabama, including territories between Tuscaloosa and Anniston and Oxford. Chenoweth serves clients in greater Birmingham and beyond in Alabama.

In His Own Words

“I am grateful to receive this recognition and represent Regions Bank. I want to thank the many people that have trusted me with opportunities to learn, grow and work with our customers. We work in teams, and this recognition would not be possible without the Regions team.”
