Alert Options Growing at Regions Bank

Regions sent more than 513 million alerts alone in 2022 and more are on the way to help customers avoid overdrafts and fees.

By Wayne Thompson | June 9, 2023

Consider it a financial early warning system on your wrist or in your pocket – alerts from Regions Bank flag everything from temporary holds placed on your accounts due to suspected fraud or warnings about a low balance that could signal a potential overdraft and associated fees.

Regions has offered alert options to customers for more than a decade, and usage continues to grow.

Allen Jeffers, who manages the Alerts and Notifications channel on Regions.com, said Regions sent more than 513 million alerts of all types in 2022 – from text messages to emails and push notifications in the Regions mobile app. More than 9 million of those messages were to alert customers about overdrafts.

Jeffers adds that Regions is seeing a 21% year-over-year growth in alerts and alert subscriptions.

“Alerts are another benefit of banking with Regions and a way we’re giving customers more insight into their accounts and options to help them safeguard against surprises and avoid fees,” said Ryan Propst, whose Digital Portfolio and Project Management Team develops new alerts for Regions customers.

“As digital enrollment has grown, alerts are proving an increasingly popular way for customers to monitor their finances and take charge of their money.”

Regions’ Consumer Product Development Manager Jimmy Oliver said alerts factor large in the bank’s latest enhancement to its core checking products.

Coming soon, Regions Overdraft Grace will give personal checking account customers an extra business day to make deposits and cover overdrafts before fees are charged.

The no-cost service will be available automatically to all Regions Consumer Banking and Private Wealth Management personal checking accounts. Regions Now Checking is an exception as it is not eligible for Regions Standard Overdraft Coverage and does not carry any overdraft fees.

Oliver said that enrolling in Regions Online or Mobile Banking and subscribing to alerts (especially the Negative Balance and Overdraft alerts) will be the most direct way customers can monitor their checking accounts and be prepared to take any actions needed to cover overdrafts under Regions Overdraft Grace.

“This can help them quickly address a negative balance and, if their account does end up being overdrawn, take advantage of the extra day the grace waiver offers to make a deposit and cover the overdraft before fees are assessed.”
