Lining Up a $27 Trillion Putt

Attendees at the Regions Tradition Women’s Executive Golf Event learn about golf and planning for their financial future.

By Mel Campbell | May 12, 2023

The Regions Tradition is a major stop on the PGA TOUR Champions calendar.

But when you visit the tournament, you find out that golf isn’t the only thing that happens during the week.

Friday of tournament week featured a Women’s Executive Golf Event that included female executives and leaders from across the Birmingham, Alabama, area.

“This group includes leaders in our government, in the bank, in business and in our homes,” said Kelly Peace, Regions Commercial Middle Market banker in Birmingham, as she welcomed the crowd to the event.

Elizabeth Winter, Regions Private Wealth Executive and Tuscaloosa Market President, talked to the group about some of the realities of wealth passing through generations in the coming decades, as well as some personal stories and anecdotes of families managing their long-term finances and life.

“Over the next 40 years, more than $27 trillion dollars will pass from one generation to the next,” she explained. “That’s enough to cover our national debt!”

Explaining that that movement of wealth would involve many women who would have some responsibility for those funds, she added, “Your voice matters. Women sometimes have different viewpoints, and they matter. When it comes to planning and thinking about your financial future, your input matters.”

But the day wasn’t all about the future; it was also about settling things on the greens, with a little putting challenge. While the $500 prize for a 30-foot putt went unclaimed, several women came away with prizes for their links skills.

Ashley Samuels, the Executive Director of the Birmingham Education Foundation, was one of the putting challenge winners.

“I’m really excited to be out here. The weather in Alabama is wonderful,” she said. “I think it’s important that we, as women, understand our choices in how we plan our financial wealth for our families. I was invited to join this event, and I am so excited and proud to have been a part of it.”
