Teeing Up New Opportunities for Youth

Regions helps relaunch First Tee Birmingham Chapter, kicking off Regions Tradition week.

By Mel Campbell | May 11, 2023

At the Regions Tradition, Hall-of-Fame golfers compete for a PGA TOUR Champions major in Birmingham, Alabama. Many of those pros are now playing in their fifth, sixth or seventh decades.

At First Tee, they’re just getting started.

First Tee is a youth development organization that teaches life skills to help kids and teens build strength of character through golf. The organization is relaunching its Birmingham Chapter, which had been dormant for more than a decade, in partnership with Regions Bank and the Regions Tradition.

First Tee began in 1997 as a partnership among the LPGA, the Masters Tournament, the PGA of America, the PGA TOUR and the USGA to make golf affordable and accessible for all kids, with a focus on children from low-to-moderate income areas. Since its inception, First Tee has impacted more than 15 million young people through its character-building programs on golf courses, in schools and at youth-serving locations.

We are proud to support First Tee as it relaunches in our headquarters city and look forward to seeing a continuation of their positive impact on young people in Birmingham.

Topgolf Kickoff Event

Twenty kids participated in an event at Topgolf in Birmingham recently that featured the announcement of the chapter’s relaunch and golf lessons from PGA TOUR players for these aspiring pros.

Said Michael K., “My favorite thing about playing golf is meeting new people and learning to play consistently.” But he also went on to add, as people decades older than him could, “I think I need to work on keeping my cool if I make a bad shot. Sometimes, when I do, it affects the rest of my day.”

The Regions Tradition has raised more than $21 million for local charities. Regions Bank is also supporting this re-introduction of First Tee to the Birmingham community.

“Regions is committed to helping make life better in this community and all the communities we serve,” said Leroy Abrahams, head of Community Affairs for Regions. “We are proud to support First Tee as it relaunches in our headquarters city and look forward to seeing a continuation of their positive impact on young people in Birmingham.”
