The hottest golfer on the Champions Tour shows no sign of slowing down.
Schwab Cup money leader Stewart Cink matched his torrid first-round score to reach 14-under par through the halfway point of the Regions Tradition, the first major of the Champions Tour season.
A Florence, Alabama, native who played collegiately at Georgia Tech, Cink joined the PGA TOUR in 1997. He sizzled through his second trip around the Greystone Golf & Country Club Founders’ Course in suburban Birmingham on Friday, carding seven birdies while overcoming his lone bogey of the day.
Cink leads the Schwab Cup standings with $1.5 million in earnings this spring – nearly double that of second-place Zach Johnson. He is seeking his ninth tournament title since joining the Champions Tour.
Cink wasn’t the only player to match his first-round performance.
Charlie Wi posted back-to-back 66s and sits second at 12-under par. In third place at 11-under are Thongchai Jaidee, Retief Goosen, and Alex Cejka, the 2021 Regions Tradition champion.
Defending champion Angel Cabrera is tied for 20th at 5-under.
Friday’s second round was played in cooler conditions than fans and players are accustomed to, with temperatures in the low 60s after a cold front brought overnight showers to the area.
The Regions Tradition resumes Saturday morning, with the final two rounds televised on Golf Channel. Live third-round coverage is scheduled from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Central on Saturday, while final-round coverage is slated for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
