Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week was established in 1978 by the United States Congress.

In 1992, it was broadened to a whole month.

Why is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrated in May? It recognizes the first immigration of Japanese Americans, which occurred on May 7, 1843.

Also, the transcontinental railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. The month honors the Chinese Americans who worked on that endeavor.
