A childhood hobby sparked a fascination that would take him to more than 40 countries.
That same global curiosity set him on a course to study international law.
And when the opportunity arose to move to Houston, a favorite Brazilian steakhouse chain helped seal the deal.
Together, those experiences helped shape Laerte Barros’ journey to leading Regions Bank’s International Subsidiaries Banking team.
In a recent conversation with the Houston Business Journal, Barros reflected on early memories, unexpected decisions and the lessons that continue to influence his career today.
A Childhood Curiosity with Global Reach
Barros’ story begins long before banking entered the picture. Growing up in Brazil, he discovered an interest in countries and cultures far beyond his own. Ironically, that window to the larger world wasn’t opened through travel. It began with a neighbor’s international stamp collection that inspired Barros to start his own.
Looking back, he credits that early curiosity with shaping a global perspective that would later become a defining part of his life.
“That stamp collection led me to where I am,” Barros said.
Throughout his career, Barros has repeatedly stepped outside his comfort zone, including moving from Sao Paulo to Illinois to pursue a graduate degree and taking on additional opportunities requiring major personal and professional transitions. Those decisions ultimately led to leadership roles helping international companies establish and grow their U.S. presence. When an opportunity in Houston emerged, Barros saw the city’s thriving international business community as a natural fit.

Where Global Business Meets Community Impact
Today, Barros leads a team dedicated to serving foreign-owned businesses operating across Regions’ footprint. The work combines financial insights with an understanding of cultural differences, business practices, relationship-building and helping clients navigate unfamiliar environments while pursuing long-term growth.
When you are supporting a company, you’re not only supporting the company; you’re supporting the whole community around that company.” Laerte Barros, Commercial International Banking Leader
While his career has included international travel and leadership opportunities around the globe, Barros says what motivates him most is seeing the impact businesses can have on local communities.
“When you are supporting a company, you’re not only supporting the company; you’re supporting the whole community around that company,” Barros said.
Barros also appreciates support on a personal level. He credits mentors with helping him grow, adapt and prepare for whatever opportunities come next. One lesson about opportunity, shared by a mentor years ago, has stayed with him throughout his career:
“Luck is where preparation meets opportunity,” Barros said.
That mindset continues to shape the way he approaches leadership, talent development and helping international companies build successful operations.
