Every house has a story. Kyra Jefferson’s work in housing has two.
For more than 15 years, Jefferson helped people and families throughout St. Louis create foundations and open doors through her work at the nonprofit Beyond Housing. In late 2024, she left to pursue a new career opportunity in community banking. A little over a year later, Jefferson felt the call to return to the place and purpose that felt like home.
“There is something very meaningful about coming back to a place with fresh vision, greater responsibility and a renewed commitment to the people and communities we serve,” Jefferson said of her return in February. “It feels like a full-circle moment, but also a new beginning.”

Creating new beginnings is what Beyond Housing, a longtime Regions Bank community partner, has helped its clients do for 50-plus years. And, as its name implies, it involves much more than homeownership (see sidebar).
We sat down with Jefferson, now senior director of Financial Advising and Homeownership, to learn more about her journey back to Beyond Housing and what it means for the future homeowners she serves.
You first arrived to Beyond Housing back in 2009. Tell us about the roles you’ve held with the organization.
I’ve had the chance to serve in many capacities with Beyond Housing. I began as a property manager in our Rental Housing department, then a Housing counselor and Individual Development Account manager before becoming the Financial Advising department manager and director of Partnerships and Collaborations.
Each role has helped me grow with the organization to establish an impactful career. Our mission and commitment to the St. Louis community has been life-changing for many and will continue to be for years to come.
Tell us more about your current responsibilities.
My role extends beyond helping people buy homes. It’s about helping them become prepared, confident and informed long before they reach the closing table. That includes education, counseling, community partnerships, program strategy and removing barriers so people and families have a real opportunity to achieve sustainable homeownership.
What’s something you want people to know about affordable housing and achieving homeownership?
People sometimes think homeownership is out of reach for families with modest incomes. The truth is that with the right education, counseling, financial preparation and access to resources, many families can become successful homeowners.
Affordable housing and homeownership programs are not handouts. They are tools that help create pathways to long-term stability, wealth building and stronger communities.
What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
Witnessing the transformation when families begin to see homeownership as not just a dream, but a realistic, attainable goal. Every day we have the privilege of walking alongside individuals and families as they strengthen their financial foundation, build confidence, understand their options and take intentional steps toward their future and for generations to come.
Regions Bank in St. Louis recently donated $10,000 to support Beyond Housing’s work. Why do corporate partnerships matter?
Support from corporate partners like Regions Bank is important because this work cannot happen in isolation. Corporate partners help expand the reach and impact of the work we do. That matters because homeownership is not just an individual milestone; it strengthens families, neighborhoods and entire communities.
Strong corporate and nonprofit partnerships send an important message that affordable homeownership and financial empowerment are shared community priorities. When nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, and community partners work together, we are better positioned to create lasting change.
What’s been the best part of coming home to Beyond Housing?
What I have appreciated most is coming back with a deeper level of experience, perspective and purpose. I returned with expanded leadership experience, lending knowledge, stronger community relationships and an even greater understanding of what families are navigating on their path to homeownership.
I didn’t just return to an organization; I returned to a mission that has helped shape many families’ dreams while also shaping my professional journey. That’s what makes the second time around so special.
