How Family and Love of Water Shaped a Career in Banking

We all come from somewhere. One Regions banker came from a family of business owners and a life on the ocean.

For Chris Esfeller, the lessons for his success in commercial banking did not begin in a branch. They began years earlier at the helm of a boat.

Growing up on Dauphin Island on the Alabama coast, Esfeller was part of an entrepreneurial family. Today, as Commercial Banking Executive for Regions Bank’s South Alabama and Florida Panhandle markets, he still draws upon those experiences to lead one of Regions’ most successful commercial banking teams.

A Life at Regions

Esfeller has spent his entire career with Regions. He started with the bank in 2005, shortly after graduating from the University of South Alabama. What started as a position in a branch turned into a lifelong voyage, one shaped by opportunity, hard work, and a culture that rewards performance, collaboration, and leadership.

“I never intended to stay in banking,” Esfeller said. Keeping with the family tradition, he first saw banking as a temporary stop while he considered a business venture of his very own. Instead, he soon discovered a passion for commercial banking and drew upon his own experience with small business to help other ventures grow.

Along the way, Esfeller navigated every waypoint in commercial banking, made possible in part by Regions’ commitment to teamwork, trust, and professional development.

“This is the only place I’ve known,” he said. “I’m a loyal person, and I believe in the mission, culture, and team in place. That makes me proud to say that I work at Regions.”

According to Christian White, Birmingham Market President for Regions Bank, Esfeller’s career reflects both his consistency and leadership.

“Chris has been with us from the beginning of his career in 2005,” White said. “His extraordinary career really started in the branch. Then he moved into commercial and did every role in commercial banking until reaching his leadership position today.”

White added that Esfeller’s advancement shows how Regions creates opportunities for associates willing to learn, grow, and lead.

Entrepreneurial Roots, Customer Focus

Those leadership qualities have beginnings in Esfeller’s youth, lessons absorbed during family dinners about the ups and downs of running a business.

As one example, his grandfather owned the first charter boat service on Dauphin Island while his father owned a boat dealership. Esfeller even earned his captain’s license at age eighteen. As a result, while schoolmates spent summers at the beach, he woke up early most days to take customers fishing.

“Everybody who got on my boat was from a different place, so it was important to connect and ensure they had a good experience,” Esfeller offered. “I think that transitioned into what I do today.”

That connection is present in how Esfeller takes the time to truly understand how those companies operate, how they earn money, and what needs drive decision-making.

At the same time, Esfeller fully understands the sacrifices, aspirations, and pride that come with business ownership—essential to supporting a client’s long-term success.

Teamwork as a Competitive Advantage

Another important influence? Esfeller’s years on the baseball field. From little league to third baseman in junior college, he learned how success depends on preparation, accountability, and teammates who trust one another on the field and off.

White sees those same characteristics in Esfeller’s leadership today.

“True to his life in baseball, he’s competitive, but understands the need for teamwork,” White said. “That’s why, wherever you go, he has good relationships with people on his team, clients, and community leaders.”

Investing in the Community

Esfeller’s commitment to service extends well beyond banking, long putting his leadership skills to work on the boards of both the United Way of Southwest Alabama and the Mobile Downtown Alliance.

One new accomplishment? His success as Campaign Chair for the United Way’s 2025-26 fundraising effort.

According to Justine Bixler, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Alabama, “Chris’s impact as our campaign chair was felt throughout our region. His leadership drove us to exceed our campaign goal, giving us the ability to serve even more people and provide vital programming for over 181,000 people last year.”

Bixler also stressed Esfeller’s organizational discipline, how he recruited volunteers, structured campaign committees across industry segments, and helped connect companies with opportunities to make meaningful community investments.

“His thoughtful, meticulous approach helped set us up for future success,” Bixler said.

Family, Fishing, and What Matters Most

Despite all those professional responsibilities, Esfeller is quick to point to his family as his greatest source of pride and fulfillment.

He and his wife, Margeaux, recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, a story that began when they first met in school and continued through seven years of dating before marriage. Today, the Esfeller’s are raising two children: Marissa, 15, and Cooper, 11.

And, when he finds free time, he returns to the outdoors that nourished his youth. Tarpon fishing and bow hunting remain lifelong passions.

Esfeller is always happy when fishing out on the water. Even more so when he’s out fishing on the water with his children, Marissa and Cooper. To Esfeller, family matters above all. He loves spending time with his wife, Margeaux, daughter, Marissa, and son, Cooper.

More Than a Career. A Journey

Like any skilled captain sailing in changing tides, Esfeller has built a life at Regions through preparation, relationships, and an unwavering commitment to the people around him. His story reflects the values that define Regions Bank: teamwork–integrity, service, and a culture where associates can build meaningful careers over the long term.

Most of all, Esfeller’s example shows that success is about more than numbers. It is about earning trust, investing in others, and helping customers and communities chart a course toward a stronger future.
