Happy Birthday, ADA!

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law 33 years ago. Regions celebrates this important milestone with a message from Kathy Lovell, who has dedicated much of her career to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

By Candace Higginbotham | July 26, 2023

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is celebrating a birthday on July 26. Regions is a proud supporter of this important civil rights law that makes life better for people with disabilities.

The ADA, which was enacted in 1990, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all aspects of public life, including employment, transportation and public and private places open to the general public.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to one in every four adults in the U.S. has some type of disability. The ADA ensures those individuals have the same rights, opportunities and access as everyone else to lead full and productive lives.

Regions Bank and the Regions Foundation are committed to removing barriers and elevating access for people with disabilities. And the bank has a dedicated advocate in Kathy Lovell, who serves as disability services and outreach manager at Regions Bank.

It’s making life better and doing what is right – two of Regions’ core values.Kathy Lovell, disability services and outreach manager at Regions Bank

Lovell plays a leadership role in securing community partnerships with nonprofits serving people with disabilities across the bank’s footprint, advising bank leadership about accessible products and services, and creating an ADA-friendly environment in Regions Bank branches.

In this video message, Lovell describes her role, the importance of the ADA, how Regions serves customers with disabilities, and why she’s passionate about her work.

“I feel like I’m making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities that may have not been given that opportunity in the past,” Lovell said. “It’s making life better and doing what is right – two of Regions’ core values.”
