Before the Big Names, the Junior Tradition Takes Center Stage

Second annual youth golf tournament helps kick off the Champions Tour major, the Regions Tradition.

By Doug Segrest | May 10, 2022

Before hall of fame golfers take on Greystone for the 2022 Regions Tradition, some of the area’s best young golfers tried their luck.

The second annual Junior Regions Tradition, an event sponsored by Alabama Power and the Birmingham Golf Association, was held at Greystone Golf & Country Club’s Founder’s Course over the weekend. It drew dozens of participants who played on the same historic course that challenges the PGA TOUR Champions. The Regions Tradition, which begins Thursday May 12, is a Champions Tour major.

Winners in the Junior Tournament – in each of the age divisions – are invited to return to the course, approximately one week later, to stand on the 18th green and enjoy the applause and acknowledgement of their efforts, as the champion for the 2022 Regions Tradition is also honored.

And if you read the words and reactions of these young players to navigating a world-class course and their young nerves, which can be found in the complete coverage provided by the Alabama News Center, you see why they sound a bit like their “senior” counterparts, in their competitiveness and approach to the game.
