Increasing Accessibility and Furthering Inclusivity

Regions Bank is committed to creating an autism-friendly environment.

By Nicole Wyatt | April 19, 2021

Part of making banking easier is a commitment to deliver that ease to all customers. That means providing banking services that are simple, convenient and most importantly, accessible.

Since 2017, Regions Bank has had a company-wide initiative aimed at better accommodating people living with autism, as well as their family members and caregivers. According to The Autism Society of America, more than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder.

“Regions is committed to creating an autism-friendly environment,” said Regions Disability Services and Outreach Manager Kathy Lovell. “Our Autism Awareness Initiative focuses on increasing accessibility and furthering inclusivity education so everyone can bank where they feel welcomed and supported.”

Inclusivity for people with autism includes the bank’s work with physicians and behavioral psychologists to create an autism-friendly branch network; education for branch associates on autism spectrum disorder and how to accommodate a customer’s needs; and sensory packs and quiet rooms available at Regions locations across 15 states.

Now, Regions also offers virtual financial education modules, Money Basics for Life, as a new addition to its Next Step curriculum. These modules are specifically designed for people with disabilities; the curriculum is designed with a focus to meet the needs of people on the autism spectrum. Launched in late 2020, attendees to date have provided positive feedback on the learning modules.

“Regions has been very proactive in creating a corporate culture that allows people with disabilities to feel welcome, including people on the autism spectrum and their families and caregivers,” Lovell said. “We focus on providing financial products and services that are accessible to all. It’s the right thing to do, and it makes good business sense to ensure everyone can bank independently and with ease.”
