When it comes to hosting the ultimate game-day party on a budget, India Renfro-Robinson says fun festivities that don’t break the bank are the way to go.
To stay on budget, the Regions banker and football fan recommends making fan-favorite snack items at home. Whether you are hosting or attending a party — wings, pizza, and dips can be cheaper to make at home versus ordering them for takeout or delivery.
One of her favorite game-day foods are cupcakes. Instead of buying expensive custom-made cakes, she makes her own cakes and colors the icing in her team’s colors. A good box of cake mix can easily produce 24 cupcakes, she said.
“Everyone loves it and it’s a win-win for my wallet with inflation and higher prices on certain food items.”
According to a recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, prices for “food at home” – items bought in grocery and other food stores consumers use to prepare their own meals – increased 1.3% from December 2022 to December 2023.
But they were less expensive than eating out. Prices for the “food away from home” category, which includes food purchased from restaurants, vending machines, caterers and other food service companies, increased 5.2%.
