The JLB is engaged in improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The Junior League of Birmingham, Inc. (JLB) was founded in 1922 to serve the needs of women and children in the Birmingham area. Over the past 97 years, the JLB has grown from 200 to nearly 2,300 members serving diverse populations in need throughout Jefferson and Shelby Counties. As one of the largest volunteer service organizations in Alabama, and one of the 10-largest Junior Leagues in the world, we provide funding and service in a wide range of critical-need areas.

Because of the JLB, numerous non-profit organizations were created and continue to thrive in our community, including: The Literacy Council, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, the Sunshine School at Children’s of Alabama Hospital, VOICES for Alabama’s Children and Magic Moments. We continue to partner with these and other agencies annually, donating funds and volunteer hours to causes vetted and selected by the JLB.

JLB’s Invest in You program at Pathways provides homeless women the skills to reach their potential, obtain successful employment and achieve financial stability. These women want to break the cycles of homelessness and poverty. JLB volunteers teach the participants how to pay bills and balance a checking account, craft a resume and apply for a job, practice for an interview, navigate conflict, and keep a job. Women return to Pathways in gratitude because the JLB’s Invest in You program helped them obtain the job that changed their lives.

The Mission

Engage: The JLB is engaged in improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Inspire: JLB members inspire others to volunteerism.

Lead: The JLB develops the potential of women to become community leaders. We connect trained volunteers and direct funding to 38 critical community projects in health, education, financial stability, and safety and crisis intervention.

What Would You Do with $5,000 and a Day of Service?

$5,000 would enable the JLB to bring the job readiness and financial independence training of Invest in You to a wider population in the Birmingham area. On the Day of Service, Regions employees would join JLB volunteers to lead an expanded program helping even more individuals break out of poverty.
