Hire Heroes grew from the 2004 chance meeting and immediate friendship of wounded U.S. Army Sgt. Justin Callahan and John Bardis, Chairman, President and CEO of MedAssets. At the time, Callahan was receiving treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for wounds sustained from a land mine explosion in Afghanistan. Amid seven surgeries, an amputation and extensive physical therapy, Callahan was most troubled by what he would find after recovery to continue supporting his family. His exact words were, “Who would want to hire a cripple?”

Concerned by the dismal outlook, Bardis immediately extended an employment opportunity to Callahan. That concern — for Callahan and unemployed veterans like him — inspired Bardis to create a personalized employment assistance program to help transitioning service members, spouses and veterans find civilian jobs.

Hire Heroes was launched as a program within the nonprofit Health Careers Foundation (MedAssets’ philanthropic arm) in 2005. Recognizing the need for employment support in the military and veteran population, the Health Careers Foundation ceased all other program activities to concentrate on their military-hiring initiative in 2007. The initiative’s name was officially changed to Hire Heroes USA in 2010. Since our inception, we have confirmed the hires of more than 38,000 clients.

The Mission

Hire Heroes USA’s mission is to empower U.S. military members, veterans and military spouses to succeed in the civilian workforce. We offer programs and ancillary services that respond to each of our clients’ unique career objectives.

Partnered Career Transition (PaCT)sm prepares for the job search and sees clients through until they have met their career goals. PaCT is our hallmark program, annually serving more than 12,000 new clients and thousands of existing clients annually.

Serving Spouses℠ tailors instruction to the unique challenges faced by military spouses and is delivered primarily by military spouses on our team.

Hire Heroes’ Federal Sector Program works with more than 100 new clients each month to ensure their resumes meet rigorous federal hiring standards so they can navigate the complicated federal hiring process.

What Would You Do with $5,000 and a Day of Service?

Hire Heroes prides itself on fiscal responsibility and accountability. It costs us approximately $1,000 for each client we confirm hired. This donation will empower five clients to succeed in the civilian workforce. For the Day of Service, we have various events and initiatives which could use volunteer support.
