Billy Andrade, Timothy O’Neill and Paul Broadhurst set the pace Thursday, finishing the first round of the Regions Tradition tied for first at 5-under par.
But lurking just a stroke back is a quartet of contenders – including two-time Tradition champ Steve Stricker.
Stricker won the 2022 Tradition in blowout fashion, finishing 6 shots ahead of Padraig Harrington. After one round this year, Harrington is also in the hunt, tied with Stricker at 4-under.
Held at Greystone Golf & Country Club in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, the Regions Tradition is one of five major tournaments on the Champions Tour.
The tournament began 30 years ago and has generated more than $21 million in charities, with Children’s of Alabama being the biggest benefactor.
The Tradition became a major event in 1989 and relocated to Birmingham, first at Shoal Creek, in 2011. It moved to Greystone’s Founder’s Course in 2016, where Bernhard Langer won the first of two consecutive titles.
The 2023 edition of the Regions Tradition concludes Sunday.
