SEC Sneak Peek with Peter Burns

Sports network anchor, who got his start by winning a radio contest, picks “same throne, new dragons” for SEC champs.

By Mel Campbell | August 29, 2023

Every week, Peter Burns hosts a show that features SEC greats and notables analyzing the sport and happenings around the conference.

You probably didn’t know that he wasn’t a college player himself. But that doesn’t stop Burns from sharing his opinions about the SEC in 2023, and what seems to be the popular choice to win the conference this year – the Georgia Bulldogs.

Maybe even more interesting is the fact that Burns came to his role in broadcasting by the most unusual of paths; he won a radio contest to host a show for a day. Before then, he’d been working in the oil and gas industry.

“I quit my job after I won that contest,” Peter Burns said. “I told myself ‘I want to do this’ though I didn’t know what kind of job I’d have.”

Soon after, he got a job at a local radio station selling advertising, and now, 20 years later, he’s “living his dream job” as an anchor on a major college sports network.

And as for the sport that now gives him his day job, he also says, don’t overlook the Aggies. He added, “They are going to surprise a lot of people.”

Oh, and you’ll definitely want to check out his pick for a player to watch this season.
