Regions Joins the CARI Network to Help Shape the Future of Digital Payments

Participation in the bank-led network reflects Regions' continued investment in faster, more innovative payment solutions.

By Amy Andrews | September 24, 2026

The way money moves has changed dramatically over the past decade.

Not long ago, moving funds often meant waiting hours, or even days, for transactions to clear. Today, people expect payments to happen almost instantly, whether they’re sending money, paying a bill or managing a business. As those expectations continue to evolve, so does the technology that powers the banking industry.

That’s one reason Regions Bank has joined the CARI Network, a bank-governed tokenized deposit network created to help financial institutions explore the next generation of payments and settlement capabilities. Through tokenized deposits, which are digital representations of traditional bank deposits, the network aims to support faster, more efficient movement of money on blockchain-based infrastructure while maintaining the trust, security and oversight of the banking system.

“Joining the CARI Network gives Regions the opportunity to help shape the future of payments while ensuring our clients are positioned to benefit from emerging technologies,” said Kristin Rankin, Head of Digital at Regions Bank. “As the industry explores new ways to move money more efficiently, it’s important we have a seat at the table and contribute practical insights grounded in client needs.”

For Regions, participation in CARI is the latest chapter in a broader digital evolution. In 2022, Regions expanded its use of The Clearing House RTP® network, enabling commercial clients to send and receive payments in real time and gain greater insight into cash flow. The bank also strengthened its digital treasury offerings with secure API-enabled connectivity that automates payment, reporting, and cash management processes while embedding banking services directly into clients’ business systems.

Today, the conversation is expanding beyond speed alone.

Across the industry, banks are looking at new ways to move money more efficiently in an increasingly digital world. Tokenized deposits are one of the ideas gaining attention as the next potential step in the evolution of payments

Most recently, Regions was one of several banks to announce a digital payments initiative that will connect on-chain activity with traditional payment rails and enable clearing and settlement of tokenized money. Regions is consistently exploring and developing innovative ways to improve the speed, efficiency, and resiliency of money movement. Collaboration is essential to advancing tokenized deposit capabilities.

“Regions brings an important voice to this work as one of the country’s leading regional banks, with significant experience serving businesses across its markets,” said Gene Ludwig, Founder and CEO of CARI. “The next generation of banking infrastructure will require real collaboration across the industry, and we’re thrilled to have Regions as a leader helping shape what comes next.”

By joining the CARI Network, Regions is building on years of investment in payment innovation and digital capabilities. As the industry explores what’s possible through tokenized deposits, Regions is helping ensure banks have a voice in shaping the next generation of payments and settlement infrastructure.
