Visiting Birmingham, Alabama, for the first time, some coaches from Team France had a question that a big green truck parked at The World Games soon helped answer: “What is Regions?”
“Coming into the city, they had seen the ‘Regions’ name on the skyline and approached me at our portable bank branch in Regions World Games Plaza with the question,” said Terri Bell, Regions’ market manager for branch delivery.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to share the story of our bank and welcome them to our home city,” Bell said. “We’re at one end of the plaza and the Regions Bike is at the other so we’ve enjoyed this special opportunity to serve and represent our company and brand.
“Kids love our big green truck. We’ve enjoyed watching several having their pictures taken on the steps, as well as the sight of so many athletes and their families in team colors, the other World Games attendees, and the many small business and customers stopping by.”
The bank on wheels, whose rear panel features lettering that asks, “Does your bank go the extra mile?” first went into service in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina.
Since then, the original truck and its 2019 replacement — both built by MBF Industries in Sanford, Florida — have proven to be valuable temporary stand-ins for customers of banks damaged by tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and other disasters.
This January, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta gave Regions the OK to also operate the truck as a standalone branch for non-disaster use in the Birmingham Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes Jefferson, Shelby, Bibb, Blount, Chilton and St. Clair counties.
We have different pod stations, the ATM, a waiting area for customers, security, and can do everything from issue debit cards, to take deposits, process withdrawals, stop payments, open accounts, and more.
The first use came at the Regions Tradition golf tournament in May, and now the truck is making its longest non-disaster service to date at the World Games.
The portable branch is parked underneath I-59/20 at the entrance of Regions World Games Plaza on City Walk BHAM. During the World Games, bankers serve customers inside from noon to 5 p.m. Regions DepositSmart ATM® outside is open 24/7.
Three teams of bankers have taken turns to staff the branch throughout the World Games. A World Games sponsor, Regions’ banking presence also includes mobile ATMs near the athlete villages on the campuses of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Birmingham-Southern College.
“We have different pod stations, the ATM, a waiting area for customers, security, and can do everything from issue debit cards, to take deposits, process withdrawals, stop payments, open accounts, and more,” said Chris Wilson, a 15-year veteran who normally manages Regions’ Alabaster Promenade branch in Alabaster, Alabama.
“It really is a full-service branch on wheels, and this gives us yet another way to positively impact the lives of our customers and make banking easier for them,” Wilson said. “We have had a lot of great conversations this week with customers at the World Games.”
