#BanksNeverAskThat: Something’s Phishy

Don’t fall for fake. Watch for these 5 red flags of phishing in emails, calls and texts.

By Doug Segrest | October 2, 2024

Regions Bank is once again joining with banks nationwide in the American Bankers Association’s #BanksNeverAskThat campaign. It’s all part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an initiative to educate everyone on online safety.

There’s just one goal: to help you protect yourself.

“You can stay ahead of the fraudsters and protect yourself by learning how to spot a scam,” said Kimberly Reece, of the Regions Fraud Prevention Customer Advocacy team. “It’s also important to educate your loved ones about these common red flags, particularly when it comes to keeping teens or the elderly safe.”

The best way to do that is to act now to protect your hard-earned cash against phishing scams. The key is recognizing the telltale signs of a phishing scheme, which can come in numerous forms – including through emails, phone calls and text messages.

Phishing is big business, producing $10 billion in losses from Americans in 2023 alone, according to the ABA. So, what’s your best response?

Get scam smart.

5 Red Flags of Phishing

    1. They ask you to open a link.
    2. They use urgent or fear-inducing language.
    3. They send an attachment.
    4. They request personal info, like PINs, passwords or Social Security numbers.
    5. They pressure you to log into or send money with payment apps.

The annual #BanksNeverAsk that campaign is robust. It includes details on how to spot various phishing scams (email, text, phone and payment apps). In addition, you can test your knowledge with quizzes, including the popular Scam City, and watch some short but entertaining videos.

It’s all about knowing the red flags of phishing.

Regions is proud to participate as part of ongoing efforts to educate the public. Our mission is to help keep others safe.

The #BanksNeverAskThatCampaign also has so much great content, including great advice on steps you can take before scammers come calling. It’s also part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a nationwide focus on keeping everyone safe from scams.

So, what are you waiting for? Join Regions and the ABA throughout the month of October and learn to spot the red flags of phishing. Remember, #BanksNeverAskThat.
