A pair of Regions Tradition record setters are set up for an old-school final round showdown.
The last two golfers to match the Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Alabama – defending Regions Tradition champion Steve Stricker and Swedish golfer Robert Karlsson – were at it again in the third round of the PGA TOUR Champions major.
Karlsson sizzled with an 8-under 64 in his first Regions Tradition appearance, in 2020. Stricker carded the same record score the year before, en route to the first of his two Regions Tradition titles.
But Saturday, Karlsson went one better, scorching the course for a 9-under 63 to break the record and leave him tied atop the leader board with Sunday’s final round remaining.
And, of course, he’s tied at the top with none other than Stricker, who matched the old course-best of 8-under 64 as he moved closer to his third Regions Tradition title in five years.
Known as “The Scientist” for his analytical approach, Karlsson put himself in position for his first Champions Tour win by recording eight birdies, as well as an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, Saturday.
Stricker, meanwhile, recorded eight birdies, including six on the back nine.
2023 Regions Tradition runner-up Padraig Harrington is third, just two strokes back. Paul Broadhurst is fourth at 13-under. And another former Regions Tradition champion, Alex Cejka, joined Tim O’Neill and Jerry Kelly in a three-way tie for fifth at 12-under.
Held annually at Greystone, the Regions Tradition is one of five major tournaments on the Champions Tour. The tournament began 31 years ago and has generated more than $21 million in charities, with Children’s of Alabama being the biggest benefactor.
The 2023 edition of the Regions Tradition concludes Sunday with action beginning at 8 a.m.
